Flowers have for centuries carried symbolic meanings, and in Victorian times a complicated series of associations grew up around flora and fauna.  Each leaf or bloom represented a different sentiment or emotion, therefore the recipient of a bouquet of flowers would understand the message implied by the choice of flowers .... daffodils represented "regard" for example, and the daisy "innocence and purity".
